Detailed Program

Thursday 11th July: Day One

Session One: Sustainability Developments

With the use of case studies, this session gives an update on sustainability in the detergent & home care industry. The use of life-cycle analysis to measure environmental impacts is discussed. With growing interest in a circular economy, the use of Cradle-To-Cradle design approach is introduced. Examples will be given of home care products that have been designed so that nutrients and packaging enter continuous loops. The use of ocean plastic in finished product packaging is covered, as well as case studies.

The session adjourns with featured speakers discussing approaches to further the green agenda. Although sustainability and green issues are rising on the corporate agenda, relatively few companies are taking leadership. What more can be done to push the green needle in the detergent & cleaning products industry?

Session Two: Green Ingredients Update

The move towards green ingredients is gaining pace. Detergent and raw material producers are moving towards renewable feedstock, whilst finished product companies are looking at green ingredients. This session covers important developments. An update is given on allergens in home care & cleaning products, green labeling schemes for cleaning products, as well as sustainable fragrances. A leading natural brand shares its experiences in developing green formulations. What are key lessons for brands looking to ‘clean up’ their formulations?

To conclude, featured speakers will debate the sustainability of detergents and other raw materials. Why is it getting more difficult to assess the sustainability of raw materials? What are the shortcomings of existing green ingredients? What should be the way forward?

Friday 12th July: Day Two

Workshop: Advances in Bio-Based Surfactants

This workshop looks at the growing area of bio-based surfactants and their applications in cleaning products. An introduction will be given to surfactants and their related health & environmental impacts. Details will be given of the different types of bio-based surfactants and their sustainability credentials.

The technical issues of using bio-based surfactants in product formulations will be covered, including a discussion on the performance and cost issues. Guidance will be given to companies looking to use bio-based materials in cleaning product formulations. To conclude, insights will be given into the future direction of bio-based surfactants. What kind of materials will we expect to see?
